1. Customize Your Sidebar and Keep it Consistent
The sidebar in WordPress is a dead “giveaway” when a user visits your site. The sidebar will have default titles like “Blogroll”, “Categories” and “Archives”. You can easily change the text of these titles, and which sections are displayed, by editing the sidebar.php file in the theme directory. Also, WordPress displays a different sidebar depending on what page of the site you’re on, which can also be changed. I personally prefer to display virtually the same sidebar on all pages, to keep the site consistent.

Most of the time, websites that are stealing the content are automated, so won’t remove the link. This way, more people read your article, and you get a link that will help your page rank.

You can customise the message and the links if you require, but the default settings probably don’t need to be changed.

This article was by Kyle Eslick at wphacks.com – See the original here.

While this blog will probably not get to caught up in covering search engine optimisation, there are definitely a few tweaks that you can make to your existing WordPress theme that will help optimise your blog. In this post I’m going to cover a quick adjustment that you can make to your title tag to show a more optimal title.

By default, your WordPress theme will likely come with a pretty standard code for your blog’s title. It probably looks something like the following:

<title><?php bloginfo(‘name’); ?> <?php if ( is_single() ) { ?> » Blog Archive <?php } ?> <?php wp_title(); ?></title>

Unfortunately this is not the best way to code your title for your WordPress. Ideally, you’ll want a more search engine friendly way to display a custom title for each page of your WordPress blog. In order to achieve this, here is the code I recommend using:

<title><?php if (is_home () ) { bloginfo(‘name’); }

elseif ( is_category() ) { single_cat_title(); echo ‘ – ‘ ; bloginfo(‘name’); }

elseif (is_single() ) { single_post_title();}

elseif (is_page() ) { single_post_title();}

else { wp_title(‘’,true); } ?></title>

This code will actually display a custom title for each different type of page on your blog automatically.

If you’re truly ambitious, you can actually use a plugin that will do all the dirty work for you. That plugin is called All-In-One SEO Pack, and it will help automate the process for displaying completely custom meta tags for each page of your blog, including the title field.

Writing articles without any research, or on the spur of the moment, isn’t easy and rarely happens. Inspiration for anything usually comes whilst concentrating on other things. You may make a mental note to do a write up on something, but 9 times out of 10, you’ll (or I’ll) forget to do something about it.

There are many bookmark sharing tools around, and you could always copy and paste a link and some text, but that’s a bit fumbly. Perhaps you should have a look at the Clipmarks Firefox addon.

This powerful tool sits dormant until you click the icon between the address and search bars. Click the icon and the Clipmarks interface appears. Then all you need to do is click to select titles, paragraphs, images and links (click next to the link to avoid following it), and then confirm your selection.

You can choose to save this information to your clipmarks account and keep it private, or share it with the clipmarks community, but you can also publish it to a huge range of social networking and blogging platforms, including self hosted WordPress installations.

Everyone has their own productivity methods, so Clipmarks won’t be for everyone, but it’s definitely worth looking at. Did I mention that it’s free?
